Payroll: How to Update Your Tax File Number (TFN)
What should I do to update my Tax File Number details?
If your Tax File Number (TFN) details need to be updated, complete the new TFN Declaration form issued to you and provide your TFN as soon as it is available. Once the amended form is received, your payroll record will be updated.
How do I complete the TFN Declaration form?
Complete the form using the selections that match your tax status.
What should working holiday makers select?
If you are working in Australia on a TZ / 417 Working Holiday Maker visa, select:
- Question 8: A working holiday maker
- Question 9: No — do not claim the tax-free threshold from this payer
When do I need to provide my TFN?
You have 28 days from the start of your contract to provide your TFN to your payer so your payroll record can be updated.
What happens if my TFN is not provided within 28 days?
During the first 28 days, the payer must withhold at the standard rate. After 28 days, if your TFN has not been provided, the payer will withhold the top rate of tax from future payments.
What happens after I submit the updated form or TFN?
Once the amended TFN Declaration form and TFN details are received, the payroll record is updated accordingly.
